Petri Kumela, named Finland's most interesting guitarist, continues his popular series of solo guitar concerts at the Helsinki Music Centre. Once again, the programme is far from conventional.

The concert also marks the release of Kumela's new album "Tempered Guitar" (Alba Records), featuring music by Jacquet de La Guerre, Bach, Tiensuu and Hilli performed on a microtonal guitar.

The first half of the concert is devoted to Baroque music, approached from two very different angles.

Kumela has arranged for guitar the first keyboard suite by the French early Baroque composer Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (1665-1729). This relatively little-known, multi-movement work is followed by one of the late Baroque's best-known single-movement masterpieces, Johann Sebastian Bach's (1685-1750) Chaconne, BWV 1004, originally written for violin but for nearly a century also a staple of the classical guitar repertoire.

The second half of the concert is filled by a brand-new, large-scale work, the premiere of a forthcoming signature piece: composer Lauri Supponen's (b. 1988) Millefleurz for guitar, electronics, video and sofa. Supponen is one of our most original and endearing composers. Here is how he describes the work himself:

Inspired by medieval millefleur patterns, Millefleurz is a surrealist parade for six guitar strings, a worn-out sofa, animals of inconsistent size, and all the flowers that are allowed to bloom.

Kumela performs all the works on a microtonal classical guitar, which allows for historical and other non-equal-tempered tuning systems.

Slovenian-born composer, flutist, and music producer Hanan Hadžajlić is arriving in Helsinki to perform and make music together with the musicians of Avanti! on the 2nd of September 2026 at Post Bar in Kallio. The concert is a part of the Helsinki Festival, which is held between 18th of August until the 5th of September around the capital city.

Hanan Hadžajlić is a composer, flutist, producer and researcher whose work spans contemporary art music, improvisation and popular music production, with a particular focus on rap and trap. Active on the international contemporary music scene for more than a decade, she has developed long-term collaborations with Ensemble Mosaik, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart and ensemble hand werk, among others.

Drawing on experience in classical and contemporary music, free improvisation, and the metal and alternative music scenes, she has cultivated a distinctive artistic practice that moves fluidly between diverse musical languages and aesthetic contexts. Alongside her work as a composer and performer, Hadžajlić is the founder and artistic director of Impro Ensemble MAS, teaches at the Composition Department of the Academy of Music, University of Sarajevo, and works as a producer and beatmaker, creating tracks that have amassed hundreds of millions of streams across the Balkans and beyond.

Hadžajlić holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Flute for her dissertation Flute as a Meta-Interface of Modular Systems in Contemporary Electroacoustic Music and is currently pursuing doctoral research in composition on Models and Procedures in Free Musical Improvisation, a part of which can be seen and heard in this concert. She also studied Transdisciplinary Theory of Arts and Media, and is a co-founder of INSAM Journal of Contemporary Music, Art and Technology.

About the concert

Bringing together flute, tape, beatbox, amplified instruments, improvisation and ensemble performance, the concert traces a path through Hanan Hadžajlić’s musical worlds and artistic practice, placing her music in dialogue with selected works by other composers. The program spans contemporary composition, electronic dance music, trap and black metal.

Throughout the evening, existing sounds, voices, bass structures, media fragments and musical idioms are extracted, transformed and recontextualized. The political and symbolic narratives surrounding Hadžajlić’s tape composition Koh-i-Noor set the tone for the program grounded in experimentation, improvisation, amplification, and intensity. The circulation of musical materials across genres and traditions reflect the fluidity and the freedom of the present.
